Key Concepts

When it comes to Planet Earth there is a lot of vocabulary. Here are some good to know terms that you might find useful - from Biosphere to Troposphere, Holocene to Anthropocene and all that’s in between.

Services provided by the living planet to us all: clean air, regional and global temperature, fresh water, pollination, nutrient provision, disease management etc.

The ecosystem comprising the entire earth and the living organisms that inhabit it. We just love the word biosphere (life-sphere) and often use it to mean the living planet and all the Earth systems.

The lowest region of the atmosphere. The troposphere reaches from the Earth’s surface to a height of 6-10km.

The part of the atmosphere that sits just above the troposphere. It extends to a height of 70kms and contains the ozone layer.

A layer in the stratosphere that absorbs up to 97-99% of the Sun’s UV rays, and in doing so protects life on Earth from the full power of the Sun.

A period of time in Earth’s history stretching over 12,000 years to 1750. The Holocene began at the end of the last ice age.

A period of time in Earth’ history that is marked by the commencement of significant human impact on the Earth's geology and ecosystems, to current day. Dates vary on the exact start of the Anthropocene, but here at VoteGPA we tend to go with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, in 1750.

A philosophical concept that defines the natural right we each have to be in control of our own bodies and our own lives. Personal Sovereignty is based on personal integrity and our own moral compasses. We imagine personal sovereignty to be a piece of paper you are holding. You tear off small sections as you create governance structures relevant to where you live, thereby saying: I cede a part of my sovereignty in order to live here and abide by these rules.

The right for all people to freely choose their sovereignty at the government level. Self Determination is based on the principle of equal rights for all.

Building on the principles of Self Determination, National Self Determination refers to the creation of nations and national governments. History will show that we created our 200 nations when we averaged just less than 2 billion people. Now we number almost 8 billion and things have changed.

Building on the principles of Self Determination, global Self Determination would see the creation of our first global authorities. We are more connected than ever before in the history of humanity and face a global problem and responsibility that supersedes the capacities of individual governments or their multilateralism. We did not design 200 nation states to protect and enhance a biosphere for the ultra long term from our global selves. This is our fault, not theirs.

The ecosystem comprising the entire earth and the living organisms that inhabit it. We just love the word biosphere (life-sphere) and often use it to mean the living planet and all the Earth systems.

Global Planet Authority: How we're about to save the biosphere

by Angus Forbes

Our most valuable global asset, the biosphere, is being destroyed by all eight billion of us. We are failing to protect a global asset that knows no national boundaries, because we don’t have a specialized global protectorate whose sole job is to deliver biophysical integrity, now and for the ultra long term. By nature of the asset being global, the authority must have sufficient power over all human organizational forms, including the nation state and you and me.Packed full of facts, figures and statistics, Global Planet Authority shows how we as global citizens can come together today to vote into existence our first global authority. It will be our first act of global self determination and there is no one’s permission to seek except our own.Because we know the problem and we are now connected, we are already 80% of the way to creating this vital authority. Now it is time to take the last step. Humanity will thank us forever.

Important quotes

“Just as in the late Roman Empire, deep stresses are rising and system resilience is declining. Governments are ever more forlornly trying to manage increasingly painful tradeoffs between people, planet and prosperity.” Homer-Dixon 2003

“There is a disjuncture between current institutional capacity to provide public goods and the structural characteristics of a much larger-scale, global economy” Ian Christie and Diane Wharburton.

“Every living system is declining, and the rate of decline is accelerating. Basically, civilization needs a new operating system and we need it within a few decades” Paul Hawken 2009.

"What humans do over the next 50 years will determine the fate of all life on the planet. Until humanity manages to sort itself out and get a coordinated view about the planet it’s going to get worse and worse." David Attenborough 2010

“The dominant governance systems cannot provide the means of stopping and reversing our self-destructive behaviour. A new vision and understanding of how to govern ourselves is essential” Cormac Cullinan 2011

"The resources at our disposal today, the powers that we have released, could not possibly be absorbed by the narrow system of national units which the architects of the human earth have hitherto used. The age of nations has passed. Now, unless we wish to perish, we must shake off our old prejudices and build the earth. The more scientifically I regard the world, the less I can see any possible biological future for it except the active consciousness of its unity." Teilhard 1931
